Ambassador Interview: Costanza on Gamifying Her Classroom with ClassMana

When Classcraft shut down, many teachers were left without a classroom gamification tool that had transformed their teaching. Costanza Cossu, a Math and Science teacher at a middle school in Italy and ClassMana ambassador, was one of them.
We spoke with Costanza to find out how she rediscovered student motivation through ClassMana, using boss battles, customizable avatars, and a reward system that turns every lesson into an adventure.

Can you briefly introduce yourself?

My name is Costanza Cossu and I teach Math and Science at a middle school. I currently have 4 classes with a total of about 87 students. My goal has always been to make science subjects not only understandable, but also engaging.

How did you use Classcraft in the past?

I was a heavy user of Classcraft. I mainly used it for Quests: I had created a huge number of them to allow my students to progress at their own personalized learning pace. It was the beating heart of my teaching. I also loved Boss Battles, which turned review sessions into exciting collaborative game moments.

After Classcraft disappeared, what were you looking for in a new tool?

After it shut down, my priority was finding a tool that wasn't just a "point tracker," but something that could truly bring pure gamification back into the classroom. I was looking for something that could turn the class group into a role-playing game again, maintaining that sense of adventure we had built over the years.

How are you using ClassMana in your classroom right now?

I currently use ClassMana as a motivation engine.
  • Initial phase: I used it intensively to reward positive behavior and motivate students.
  • Favorite tools: I use the random student picker all the time (which makes assessment moments less stressful and more playful) and Boss Battles.
  • Evolution: Over time, I started using it in a more targeted way, alternating it with other teaching tools that I gradually introduce.

Which ClassMana tools or features work best for you?

What I appreciate most is the ability for students to customize their own avatars and the reward system.
A suggestion for the future: If you could add "quests" (like the old adventures), that would be fantastic. Also, a direct integration with Google Classroom or Amplify would make the workflow much smoother for teachers like us who manage multiple platforms.
Editor's note: Quests have been released on ClassMana! Google Classroom integration is on the roadmap.

What do your students seem to enjoy most about ClassMana?

The strongest reaction always comes from the Avatars: students love customizing them. Rewards and battles are also a big hit, despite the occasional technical hiccup: sometimes, if I switch screens to use external exercises (like those from Amplify or Contaci), the battle resets, which can be frustrating during a lesson. But the enthusiasm remains high!

What tips would you give to other teachers using ClassMana?

My advice is very simple: just dive in. Getting started with ClassMana is really easy and intuitive. You don't need to be a tech expert to see an immediate change: in no time, it transforms the classroom atmosphere, making it more collaborative and positive.

What is the most unexpected, funny, or memorable thing that happened in class?

The most unexpected thing was seeing students who were usually disengaged start asking me for extra assignments just to earn points and rewards! But the funniest moment by far was an "side effect" of a reward: I had to sing "Felicità" by Al Bano and Romina in a duet with a student in front of the entire class. It was a moment of great hilarity that bridged the gap between us and created an unforgettable memory for all of us.
