Combining Duplicate Quests

If you teach the same subject to parallel groups, you may have copied a quest into each class and then repeated every edit by hand. The Combine Quests wizard folds those copies back into a single quest that all of those classes share, so from then on one edit reaches every class.

Student work is not lost in the process: submissions on the copies move over to the matching objective of the quest you keep.

When to Use It

Use combining when several of your classes each have their own copy of what is really the same quest. After combining you have one quest, used in all of those classes, with one set of objectives to maintain.

Do not combine when the classes genuinely need to diverge — different objectives, different rewards, a different pace. In that case keep the copies and see Reusing Quests Across Classes.

Finding Duplicates

ClassMana looks for quests with near-identical names across your classes. When it finds any, a banner appears on the quest list page above your quest library:

"Some of your classes seem to have their own copy of the same quest (4 quests in 2 groups). Combine them into one shared quest and your edits reach every class at once."

Click Combine quests in the banner to open the wizard.

Only Your Own Quests

You can only combine quests you own. Quests that belong to a co-teacher are listed in your library, but they are never offered for combining.

Step 1 — Pick the Quest to Keep

The wizard shows each group of look-alike quests with the classes they are used in. For every quest in the group you see:

  • The map thumbnail and quest name
  • The number of objectives
  • Which of your classes use it
  • How many student submissions it carries

Click Keep this one on the quest you want to survive the merge. Its name, description, map background and settings are the ones the combined quest ends up with, so pick the copy you consider most up to date. The rest of its group is folded into it.

Which Copy to Keep

Prefer the copy you have edited most recently or the one with the most student progress — that keeps the merge simple and leaves the least to move around.

Step 2 — Compare and Combine

The second step is a side-by-side table showing exactly what the combined quest will look like.

  • The left column ("Kept") is the quest you chose. Below its name it tells you how many objectives it ends up with.
  • Every other column is one of the look-alike quests, with a tick box, the classes it's used in and its number of student submissions.
  • Every row is one objective of the combined quest. Objectives that only exist in one of the other quests are marked Added — they move into the kept quest, keeping their spot on the map and their connections.

Each row also states In X of Y quests, so you can see at a glance which objectives all copies agree on.

Merge Risk Badges

Each column carries a badge estimating how straightforward it is to fold that quest in:

  • Easy merge (green) — Every objective lines up with an identical counterpart. Nothing changes shape.
  • Tricky merge (orange) — The kept quest changes shape: objectives are added, moved, or worded differently, but no student work can end up in an unexpected place. The table spells out what changes.
  • Risky merge (red) — Student work could land on the wrong objective, either because two objectives are so alike that matching them up is a guess, or because an objective with submissions on it is worded differently from the version being kept.

Quests marked as a risky merge start unticked, so you can safely combine the straightforward ones first and deal with the odd one out separately. Untick any other column to leave that quest out of this merge; tick a risky one back in if you have checked the table and are happy with it.

What Each Cell Tells You

For every objective, each column shows what happens to that quest's version of it:

  • Identical — Same content, transfers cleanly.
  • Differs — This version is dropped in favour of the kept one. The cell lists what differs (title, description, type, spot on the map) and shows the other title so you can check you're not losing anything.
  • Moves over — This quest's version is the one the combined quest keeps, so it moves across as it is.
  • Not in this quest — This quest has no counterpart for that objective.
  • Left out — The column is unticked, so this quest is not part of the merge.

Each cell also states how much student work rides on it: "3 student submissions move over." or "No progress to move."

Combining

Click Combine quests and confirm. When you do:

  • The kept quest is added to every class that used one of the merged quests, keeping each class's Active / Draft state
  • Objectives that only existed in a merged quest are handed over to the kept quest, along with their quiz, their student progress and the paths leading to them
  • Student submissions move onto the matching objective of the kept quest. If a student already had progress on that objective, their existing progress is kept
  • The merged quests are deleted

Rewards are never handed out a second time — moving progress does not re-award Experience, Gold, Mana or Health.

This Cannot Be Undone

Combining deletes the merged quests. Review the table before confirming, especially any column badged as a risky merge.

After Combining

You land back on the quest list with one shared quest in place of the copies. From here:

  • Use the Used in N classes badge on the quest card to check which classes use it and whether it is active there
  • Open the quest in the editor and verify the map — objectives taken over from another quest keep their original coordinates, so they can end up on top of an existing objective. Drag them apart if needed
  • Check the Progress page to confirm your students' progress came across as expected

Tidy the Map First

If the copies had objectives in different places, expect to do a little rearranging afterwards. Doing it once now saves you from maintaining several maps forever.
